Mariana Middelhof completed her Bachelor degree in Natural Sciences at the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras Campus. She received her medical degree from San Juan Bautista School of Medicine in 2010, completed her pediatric residency training at San Juan City Hospital in 2013 and accomplished her Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition Fellowship at University of Rochester School of Medicine in 2016.
While a resident, Mariana received for three consecutive years the award presented by the faculty for demonstrating “Excellence Academic and Clinical Skills in Continuity Clinics”, as well she received the awards presented by the faculty for demonstrating: “ Excellence in Academic and Clinical Skills in Pediatric Intensive Care Unit”, “Excellence in Academic and Clinical Skills in Pediatrics Neonatal Intensive Care Unit”, “ Excellence in Teaching Skills by demonstrating the ability and disposition to teach students and peers” as well she was recognized by her faculty by demonstrating “Overall Excellence Skills in General Pediatrics”.
During her fellowship she conducted research in the areas of total parenteral nutrition associated liver disease and the usage of Fish-Oil Emulsion, factors affecting copper levels in cholestatic infants. During her fellowship she received recognition for he excellency in patient care as well. She is very interesting currently in pursuing clinical research in area of gastric and colonic dysmotility.
Dr. Middlehof is the lead author of several publications, oral and case reports presented in various forums: “Asociación Latinoamericana de Pediatría”,“Sociedad Puertorriqueña de Pediatría Scientific Forum”, Society of Critical Care Medicine, Annual Research and Education Forum of the University of Puerto Rico Medical Sciences Campus, Pediatric Academic Society, NASPGHAN and WCPGHAN.
Outside of her professional career she enjoys theatre, singing, listing to music, swimming, exercising, biking, traveling, cooking, reading, crafting, watching foreign movies and documentaries. She also enjoys spending quality time with her family, volunteering and taking part in community service.
Areas of clinical interests include: dysphagia, GERD, gastroparesis, chronic constipation, chronic nausea, chronic pseudo-obstruction, short bowel syndrome, intestinal failure, malnutrition, obesity, pancreatic insufficiency, liver disease: including biliary atresia, choledochal cyst, autoimmune hepatitis, nonalcoholic fatty liver, neonatal cholestasis, viral hepatitis, pancreatitis, inflammatory bowel disease, celiac disease, eosinophilic esophagitis. Special areas of interest include liver, nutrition, dysmotility evaluation including esophageal manometry, anorectal manometry, colonic manometry, antroduodenal manometry, diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy.
